This network was founded in 2004 and comprises a group of experts from 25 countries who focus on issues relating to work-life balance, parental leave schemes and the policy framework governing them.

Bertelsmann Stiftung
The “Early Childhood Education” project is committed to equal opportunities and ‘good’ education, care and upbringing for all children in nurseries. To ensure this, we need professional early childhood education systems, developed with the involvement of everyone who plays a part in the system.

World Health Organization (WHO)
The OIF is part of an initiative launched by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in 2008 and subsequently run by the Federal Institut for Public Health (BIÖG, former BZgA) – a WHO collaborating centre for sexual and reproductive health – in close cooperation with a group of European experts.

International conferences
The Europe-wide networking of family research and all stakeholders from the fields of practice, politics and research is the central theme of the conferences that the ÖIF has been organising regularly since 1997 in collaboration with various partners.

The Journal of Family Research publishes research on the many facets of family life. The OIF is represented on the editorial board.
Former cooperations
The study Living Conditions, Safety and Stress in Everyday Life / Lebenssituation Sicherheit und Belastung im Alltag (LeSuBiA) examines the unreported incidence of violence in Germany. LeSuBiA is the first cross-gender population survey of its kind in Germany and collects data on respondents’ experiences, attitudes and behaviours. The ÖIF was represented on the study’s scientific advisory board.
Initial findings have been published in Themenheft I (in German).
Duration: 2021 to 2026
The national TSI-Project supported Austria in implementing a reform to improve working conditions for staff in early years education settings – a key driver for enhancing the quality of early childhood education, care and support (ECEC). It was implemented by the UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia in collaboration with the European Commission’s DG REFORM, under the leadership of the BMBWF and with the support of the Charlotte Bühler Institute, the One Step Beyond agency and other experts.

The impact of technological transformations on the Digital Generation (DigiGen) was an international collaboration involving nine partner organisations as part of an EU Horizon 2020 project. DigiGen investigates how children and young people use digital technologies in their everyday lives and how these technologies influence them. To this end, the project examines the areas of family, school, leisure and social participation.
Duration: 2019 to 2022
The EU-funded international project “Social Platform on Research for Families and Family Policies” (FAMILYPLATFORM) aimed to identify societal challenges and investigate their impact on families. As a project involving twelve partner organisations, it was funded under the 7th Framework Programme for Research (FP7). The project brought together a social platform comprising stakeholders from research, practice and policy to consolidate the perspectives of various social groups.
Duration: 2009 to 2011
The EU Observatory on the social situation, demography and the family was established in 1989 by the European Commission as an independent expert body to monitor developments in the EU-15. It observed political, demographic and social trends and analysed their impact on families – drawing on scientific excellence and country-specific knowledge. From 1998 to 2004, the OIF managed and coordinated the Observatory.
